Date Acquired: 12/13/2023

Location Acquired: 1XRun via NTWRK Auction

Provenance: 1XRun, from Sanrio’s Small Gift Miami exhibit, 2010

Type: Acrylic on shaped wood, 1 of 29 masks in the exhibit

Size: ~8.5 inches x 14 inches

Description: This is one of the “masks” by Lister – they all appear to be painted in 2010, but I’m not 100% on that. While seemingly simple, there’s more to these than meet the eye – even though this is a pink kitty, it’s recognizably something Lister has created. The masks are 3/8″ plywood cut into the rough shape of a head, painted with a face on the front and signed on the back. The three masks I own are animal faces and the rest run the gamut from geisha to superhero to monster. This mask happens to be an ovoid pink pig face with light and dark pinks, along with white and black paints. I discovered that these masks were from a grouping of 29 displayed at Sanrio’s Small Gift Miami exhibit, 2010.

Personal Connection: None, just another Lister piece to add to the collection. Not sure why I am so enamored of his work, there’s just something off, dangerous, and totally unique about his artwork. Instantly recognizable.
